Introducing The Natural Building Lab (TUB)

The Natural Building Lab (NBL), Department for Constructive Design & Climate-adaptive Architecture is part of the Institute of Architecture at the Technical University Berlin (TUB). The Natural Building Lab operates as part of a transdisciplinary network undertaking projects that produce knowledge and built prototypes for a post-fossil society.

The NBL is a workshop in the figurative and real sense, in which students and teachers experiment and produce together as a team in research, teaching, and practice between theory and craftsmanship in a wide variety of scales and learning formats up to a scale of 1:1.

The NBL's research focuses on low-tech buildings and constructions for the post-fossil, post-consumer society, and circular, climate-adapted architecture. Innovative (construction and research) projects as real-world laboratories for the building sectors are developed in transdisciplinary teams with different stakeholders.

Role in the project

In the GreeNest ecosystem, The Technical University Berlin is involved in two ways:

  1. The Natural Building Lab (TUB) is part of the Institute of Architecture of TUB and a pioneering lab and research institution in the reuse of natural materials, sustainable construction and Life Cycle Assessment. The TUB plays an active role in the formulation of German and EU certification and standards.

  2. The TUB is further involved as the owner of the real demo site “Berlin-Museum” (DC#1) and is responsible for the planning, procurement, and supervision of the implementation and construction works.
